Must-Have Packing and Moving Supply Checklist

Moving house is one of the most stressful things we experience. It can feel like a huge ordeal; from preparing to move home to moving day, the process can be incredibly stressful.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re moving from one home to another or putting your stuff in storage; packing all your belongings is challenging if you’re not organized.

That’s why we’ve created this checklist for you to use to ensure you don’t forget anything leading up to moving day.

For starters, you’ll need a few essential packing supplies to make your move a bit smoother. Let’s take a look…

Moving Supply Checklist

1. Moving Boxes

Make sure you have enough moving boxes in a variety of sizes. You can calculate how many boxes you’ll need ahead of time based on how many rooms your home or apartment has. For example, a one-bedroom apartment might require 10-15 small boxes, 3-5 medium sized boxes and 2-3 large boxes.

If you don’t want to pay tons of money for boxes, ask your nearby grocery store or nearby businesses if they have any hardwearing boxes. Sometimes Facebook and other social sites have recycling pages where you can ask whether other movers have spare boxes from their move.

2. Wardrobe Boxes

These are also useful since you can leave clothes on their hangers when moving. Each wardrobe box can hold about 2 feet of hanging clothes so you might want 2-3 per closet.

3. Heavy Duty Boxes

These boxes are great for fragile items like dishes and glassware, and heavy items like books and photo albums.

4. Packing Supplies

Many moving companies will bring their own packing supplies, but if you opt for a DIY move make sure you have the following items:

  • Packing paper
  • Moving blankets to cover your furniture and fragile items
  • Bubble wrap for fragile and oddly-shaped items
  • Mattress bags to protect from dust and dirt
  • Permanent markers for labeling boxes

5. Packing Tape

Ensure you have enough strong and sturdy packing tape that doesn’t come unstuck. You need to be able to seal your moving boxes and keep them that way. You also need to label boxes on multiple sides so it’s easier to unpack them at the other end.

6. Box Cutter and Scissors

You’ll need these to cut tape and bubble wrap, but these will also come in handy when you’re ready to unpack moving boxes.

Before your moving day, make sure to check that your moving company has the right size moving truck to accommodate all your stuff, a hand truck or moving dolly and straps to hold down heavy items.

On The Day And After

Before leaving your current home, you must leave it in a good state for the landlord and subsequent tenants. This is the only way to ensure you’ll get your deposit back.

So, have plenty of:

  • Garbage bags
  • Gloves
  • A broom
  • Mop and bucket
  • Disinfectant and cleaning supplies

…on hand, to enable you to clean as you go.

Last but not least, once you’re in your new home or your stuff is safely placed inside your storage unit, remember to bring a good box cutter with you to help you cut through that rigid packing tape!

Final Thoughts

To ensure a stress-free moving process, using the right company with the best moving supplies is an absolute must.
